What is the Body Fat Percentage Calculator? How Does It Work? Ultimate Guide
This calculator helps you estimate your body fat percentage using the U.S. Navy Method. It only requires a few simple measurements: your height, neck, waist, and for women, hip size. The results give you a clear idea of how much of your body is fat and how much is lean mass. This method is trusted by health professionals and the military. It’s a quick and easy way to track changes in your body over time.
Formulas Used
This tool uses formulas developed by Hodgdon and Beckett in 1984. These are:
For Men (Imperial units):
Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
For Women (Imperial units):
Body Fat % = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387
For Men (Metric units):
Body Fat % = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log10(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) − 450
For Women (Metric units):
Body Fat % = 495 / (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip − neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) − 450
These equations use logarithms to provide accurate results based on your body shape.

Fat Mass and Lean Mass Explained
Once your body fat percentage is known, we also calculate

- Lean Mass (LM) = Total Weight − Fat Mass
This shows how much of your body weight is fat and how much is everything else—like muscles, bones, and organs.
